Vines with an unusual location

The vines of Clos de Vougeot extend over 126 acres (51 ha) between the lower slope and the foothills. They differ from most of the grands crus of the Côte de Nuits, which are located mid-slope. From 1098, the Cistercian monks of Citeaux Abbey, 7.5 miles (12 km) from Vougeot, benefited from donations of fertile land, wasteland, or abandoned land that they quickly transformed into vineyards. The name Vougeot comes from the Vouge river, whose source is located north of the castle and passes near Citeaux Abbey.
