Hounding is the art of hunting with hounds. Kings and nobles have practised it since time immemorial. Louis de Mornay (1619-1691), Lord of Villarceaux, was Captain-Lieutenant of the Chevau-Légers of the Dauphin and the Duke of Orleans. Later, he was appointed by the young Louis XIV as Captain of the pack of the King’s hounds for fox and hare hunting. Louis de Mornay often organised hunts on his lands at Villarceaux. He even sold puppies from the pack to neighbouring lords. Louis’ mistress, Ninon de Lenclos, owned a small fawn griffon, given to her by Françoise d’Aubigné, the future Madame de Maintenon.
