The traditional implantation sites of the Corsican villages are the hillsides or the ridges of the hinterland which meet the double concern for safety and economy of arable land. Considering the invasions of all kinds that the island had to face for centuries, the mountainous hinterland was indeed the safest refuge thanks to its natural fortress topography and the resources it offered.
