Located on the roof of the world in the Arctic, Victoria Island is part of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. On the northwest, the Shaler Mountains reach above 600 meters. On the east, a vast undulating plateau surmounts steep coastal cliffs. Lowlands are dotted with rivers and lakes. This large island is sparsely populated: the inhabitants, mostly Inuit communities, are grouped in only two coastal villages.
