The bombardment of Reims Cathedral in 1914 triggered immense emotion in the city and throughout France. Despite white flags, 25 shells fell, setting fire to the wooden beams and igniting the straw covering the floor. The cathedral then served as a military hospital for German soldiers. More than 130 wounded were resting on bales of straw, and 14 did not escape the fire. The cathedral's bombing raised a general outcry against the German authorities.
