Kate is an Inuk woman. She's checking and repairing the clothes taken for the expedition on the pack ice. Synthetic after-skis have replaced hand-stitched fur boots. Motionless, she is warmly dressed in a down jacket which, by trapping a large amount of air, isolates her from the cold. She could not use it for long walks because the down would log with transpiration water and lose its insulating qualities.
