Remains of the keep

The entrance to the Domaine de Villarceaux opens onto the sole surviving tower of the castle, the Saint-Nicolas tower. The 12th century fortified dwelling was a wooden garrison post. It was rebuilt in stone in 1360 to defend the kingdom of France against the English during the Hundred Years’ War. During the Renaissance, a more comfortable manor house was added and the moats were flooded. The whole complex was dismantled in 1755 to build the Château du Haut. Today, only a part of the manor house, a piece of the keep, the Saint-Nicolas tower and the outbuildings remain. The tower still has a drinking water source in the basement.
