In preparation for the landing of the Allied forces in 1944, the commanders of Operation Overlord considered access to deep-water ports absolutely essential. These ports are to serve as a starting point for sending reinforcements to the mainland. Faced with the impossibility of taking the ports defended by the German forces, the allies built two artificial ports which were assembled on the other side of the Channel, including that of Gold Beach in Arromanches-les-Bains, which bears the name of 'Mulberry B' and whose remains are still visible to this day.
