The black-backed jackal is very opportunistic but it is also a good hunter. Scavenger, it also attacks insects or even reptiles. It explores the soil in search of termites, dung beetles or larvae. It captures grasshoppers and crickets in one leap. It consumes winged ants, spiders, scorpions, lizards or even some venomous snakes as well as crabs or frogs from water points.
