While most Korowai houses are built at the edge of clearings around 49ft (15m) above the ground, some are perched at the top of the canopy between 114 and 131ft (35-40m) high. The reasons for this choice are many. In the Indonesian tribes, high height generally symbolizes a higher social status but it also allows to dominate the forest, to monitor potential enemies and to protect oneself from mosquitoes and evil spirits.
