Leading to the choir

Locked between the vaults that seem to climb endlessly, the choir of Saint Stephen Cathedral in Metz was rearranged in 2006. Swiss designer Mattia Bonetti added a new altar made of bronze, marble, and massive oak. At its side still stands the marble seat of Saint Clement, surmounted by a canopy. All the bishops of the cathedral have sat on it since the 9th century. It is carved from an ancient Greek column and is said to date from 1090.
