Over the Canal de Bourgogne, the castle of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois stands on a promontory behind which nestles a small village. In 1195, the Castrum Novum only included a large rectangular keep. It grew over the centuries, though it suffered many degradations during the French Revolution. Its last owner, Count Georges de Vogüé (1898-1987), sold it to the State in 1936. The fortress' medieval architecture had it listed as a Historical Monument in 1984.
