Aerial focus on an open water lead in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago sea ice. Channels of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago form the shortest passage between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The Northwest Passage is the main navigable route. The sea ice completely covers the Arctic Archipelago waters in winter, making navigation impossible except for icebreakers which are used to keep trade routes open. The sea ice melts and breaks up in spring.
