The vegetation observable from the canals and rivers of Burgundy contributes to the legibility of the permeability of the soils. Where more impermeable marly, clay or silty veneers cover them, the surface hydrographic network is much more dense and branched than on the plateaus with a draining surface, giving rise to a richer vegetation of poplar groves and alluvial woodlands as here near Joigny.
