With 490 plant species listed in 2010 and an endemism rate of around 77%, the Mount Panié forest massif is a flagship site for biodiversity. The kaori of Mount Panié (Agathis montana) is the key species of this ecosystem protected since 1950 by a reserve co-managed by a Kanak association. Beyond 3937ft (1200m), it coexists with the Araucaria schmidii which dominate an undergrowth rich in Myrtaceae.
