Varied vegetation adapted to dry conditions

Located to the east of Tartane, on the northeast coast of Martinique, the Caravelle peninsula looks like an arm of land of 3,954 acres (1,600 ha), less than 0.6 miles (1 km) wide and 7 miles (12 km) long. Its tormented relief, very indented coast, and varied exposures and soils have allowed the installation of vegetation adapted to the relatively dry conditions of the site (39 to 51 inches / 1,000 to 1,300 mm of rain per year). It can be roughly classified into two main categories: halophilic, psammophilic, and lithophilic littoral vegetation, on the one hand, xerophilic vegetation with relics of forest and all its phases of degradation (secondary forests, thickets, herbaceous formations) on the other hand. However, the heterogeneity of the environment does not prevent the relative physiognomic homogeneity of the vegetation of the slopes due to the constancy of species such as wood-chic (Ardisia obovata) and wood-red (Coccoloba swartzii).
