Artisanal coastal fishing represents a strong identity element of the Var coast. It is framed by fishing labor courts set up in the 20th century to preserve fishing traditions. It differs from other fishing activities practiced in the French Mediterranean by the virtual absence of a continental plateau, preventing the practice of trawling frequent elsewhere. Artisanal coastal fishing takes the form of a wide variety of trades around the ancestral practices of fishing with nets, pots, traps, longlines, lines, or rods.
