Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral, better known to the people of Marseille as La Major, was built between 1852 and 1893 in Roman-Byzantine style. The monument surprises visitors by the juxtaposition of Romanesque and Gothic elements, the simultaneous presence of bell towers and domes, its apparatus of green and white stones, its interior decoration in marble and porphyry, and its mosaics. The seat of the Catholic archdiocese of Marseille, Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral stands on the Jean-Paul II esplanade, between the Vieux-Port (Old Port) and the port of La Joliette.
