Erected in 1644 on the initiative of the port stewards, the Tour du Fanal that overlooks Fort Saint-Jean is built on a circular plan and topped with a dome that culminates at 164 ft (50 m) above sea level. This watchtower, which allowed the ships to locate the entrance to the port in the 17th and 18th centuries, has become an emblematic landmark of Marseille. It is expected to be restored in the near future and covered with a 5,905 square feet (1,800 m²) tarpaulin in the colors of the clouds and the sun. This artistic project by Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain, called Lumière, will make the Tour du Fanal disappear from the sky of Marseille from March 4 to August 29, 2022.
