Despite its training, the Camargue horse retains the wild character conferred by youth in semi-freedom. It was therefore called a rosse in the 17th century, a term that designated a fierce horse contrary to its current meaning. Synonymous with canasson, carne, haridelle or rossinante, rosse today describes a weak, old, restive, or malformed horse.
