An ancient commercial activity

The village of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois became very active commercially from the 14th century thanks to the granting of various fairs by the Dukes of Burgundy to the Lords of Châteauneuf. At the end of the 19th century, the village, which had only 257 inhabitants in 1896, had six fairs spread over the year and a market every Monday. This sustained commercial activity was possible thanks to the protection provided by the castle and its enclosure which only offered three possible accesses to the village : the Guillaume gate to the south, the North gate and the Huillier gate to the east.
