The castle of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is a place steeped in history which owes its existence to Jehan de Chaudenay who, around the middle of the 12th century, had a stronghold built for his youngest son. This 'Castrum Novum' - which was originally only a rectangular keep perched on a rocky outcrop - has been embellished over the centuries and subsequently took the name of Châteauneuf. Among its many occupants, we will remember the names of Pierre I who participated in 1314 in the protest league against King Philip IV the Fair and undertook the construction of a fortified enclosure to protect himself from English attacks and Poinçot who fought the English until 1364 and built a new perimeter wall with defensive towers. In 1456, the castle was recovered by the Duke of Burgundy and Philippe le Bon donated it in 1457 to Philippe Pot to thank him for the negotiation of the marriage of the future Charles the Bold with Isabelle de Bourbon.
