Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is full of coats of arms which appear on both sides of its streets, on its turreted houses or here between the towers of its castle. Initially reserved for warlords, on whose shields they appeared at the end of the 11th century, the coats of arms first extended to knights and nobility, then - at the beginning of the 13th century - to bourgeois, artisans and corporations hence their multiplication in Châteauneuf-en-Auxois above the doors of the houses of the important families (Bichot, Berbisey).
