Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is a rural municipality located outside any city's attraction area but near the A6 motorway which crosses the southern part of the commune. It is found in the south-west of the Côte-d'Or, 26.7 miles (43 km) west of its prefecture Dijon and 11 miles (18 km) north-east of its county town Arnay-le-Duc. Built on a hill at an altitude of 1,558 feet (475 meters), the village overlooks the valley of the Vandenesse which flows below at an altitude of 1,122 feet (342 meters) and delimits its territory.
