Different pruning styles
The most common styles of pruning in Burgundy are the Guyot pruning and the ‘Royat cordon’ pruning. The first consists in leaving one or more branches on the vine. This quick and easy pruning is recommended for Chardonnay. However, it can be exhausting for the plant because it requires more energy to help the buds hatch. On the other hand, Royat cordon pruning is adapted to mechanization. This short pruning brings all the buds to the same level, allowing for a homogeneous maturity of the buds since they benefit from the same sun exposure.
