A stalagmite, (from the Greek stalagmos, flow), is a concretion or speleothem that arises from the floor of a cave. They are formed by a stalactite in the ceiling which releases drops loaded with limestone. It will take thousands of years for them to reach a significant height. They do not have a central canaliculus and are more massive than the stalactites that create them. They are most often in the shape of cones but, depending on the flow of the limestone drops, they can take on statuary appearances like in the caves of Qanono.
