The geographical position of Briançon at the confluence of several valleys and on the road to Italy gives it a preponderant defensive role reinforced after the territorial exchanges of 1713 between France and Savoy. Once on the front line facing an enemy slope, Briançon was surrounded by a continuous barrier of forts in stages aiming to protect the fortified city and to control the main communication routes.
