Consequences on the local population

The flooding of the Durance valley at the beginning of the 1960s to create the artificial lake of Serre-Ponçon had major consequences on the local population. The two villages of Savines (800 inhabitants) and Ubaye (150 inhabitants), as well as several hamlets, were engulfed, causing the displacement of 1,100 people. Only the village of Savines has been rebuilt higher up on the left bank of the lake.
