Przewalski horses mainly feed on plants but also need minerals which they find thanks to their highly developed sense of smell and taste. The mares, in particular, frequent the rich in minerals sites during the foals' nursing periods. In the wild, weaning occurs gradually, with the mare first refusing to breastfeed and the foal gradually gaining distance from its mother before being chased out of the harem by the dominant stallion.
