The Val Morteratsch is a valley in the municipality of Pontresina in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland that was created by glacier retreat. It begins on the northern flank of Piz Bernina, runs in a straight line from south to north and after about 8 kilometers flows into Val Bernina near Morteratsch. The Morteratsch Glacier is located in the upper part of the valley. The name Val Morteratsch is more recent and based on the name of Val Roseg (German: Rosegtal), which was created by the Roseg Glacier. That is why the name Val Morteratsch is not yet on the Swiss map. In the lower Val Morteratsch, trees also grow on the valley floor. The glacier retreated occured there over 100 years ago. Near the glacier tongue, the glacier retreat was not that long ago. Bushes are already growing on the valley floor, but there are only trees above the lateral moraines.
