Millions of years ago, the entire island of Rurutu in the Austral archipelago rose above the sea as a result of the uplift of the earth crust. Its former fringing reef has turned into coastal cliffs. The steep walls drilled of caves ( Ana Tane Uapoto cave on the photo) that surround most of the island were the outer slopes of the coral reef.
