Unity of appearance and identity role

In the daily practice of their activity, the herdsmen (gardians and manadiers) of Camargue have no imposed dress code. However, they most often wear the colorful patterned shirt known as the Camargue shirt and the wide-brimmed hat or Valergues imposed by the Marquis de Baroncelli when he founded the Nacioun Gardiano in 1909. These elements of the traditional costume worn on the occasion of gatherings and celebrations allow an appearance unity and play a significant identity role. They are also suitable for both male and female riders.
