Mangareva’s Pe'i dance tirelessly replicates the scene of the conception of 'Ina One, the sand woman, by Tiki, the first man, considered to be at the origin of the Mangarevans. This dance unique by the sobriety of its gestures and its choreography and the repetitive simplicity of its rhythm was first described in the 19th century by European missionaries during funerals.
