The Medieval City of Carcassonne is the 5th most visited monument in France. Its 1.86 miles (3 km) of ramparts, 52 towers and barbicans, and two enclosures make it the best preserved and most important medieval fortress in Europe. The Comtal castle, protected behind the battlements, was the home of the Viscounts of Trencavel. The visit of this castle and the medieval city offers a timeless moment, with a privileged view of the Pyrenees, the Montagne Noire, and the Bastide of Carcassonne.
