A city marked by bishops

Several bishops have marked the history of Mende. Since the martyrdom of Saint Privat in the 3rd century, the city's expansion has revolved around its crypt. In the 12th century, Count-Bishop Aldebert III of Tournel built the ramparts that are still marked by a circular boulevard. Both as Pope and Bishop of Mende, Urban V initiated the construction of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Privat Cathedral in 1368. Julien, Clément, and François Della Rovere, members of the Pope's family, completed the monument. Sylvestre de Crécy de Marcillac gave it its great organs in the 17th century, while François Placide de Baudry de Piencourt brought Aubusson tapestries.
