Villedieu-les-Poêles, in the Manche department, is renowned for its bell foundries and copper hammering (copperware and pans). The new bells for Notre-Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris) were made there by the Cornille-Havard Foundry in 2013. Founders from Lorraine worked in the region from the 16th century. The noise was nonstop and was said to deafen the inhabitants, hence their nickname Sourdins (deaf). In the Middle Ages, the town was managed by the Knights Hospitallers, who set up a commandery there.
