Charleville-Mézières' Place Ducale is inspired by the Place des Vosges in Paris. In 17th century architecture, it constitutes the heart of the city, surrounded by 26 pavilions of Dom stone and red brick. They line their arches over 416 ft long (127 m) and 295 ft wide (90 m). A fountain was reinstalled in the center of Place Ducale as a replacement for the statue of Charles of Gonzague, founder of Charleville. The City of Art and History label was awarded to Charleville-Mézières by the Ministry of Culture and Communication in 2013.
