Marseille town planning is characterized by the cohabitation of architectural styles from different eras in a city center rebuilt on itself over time. Except for the current Rue de la République, the city has not experienced any Haussmanian redivision nor architectural homogenization of its buildings. Structures of radically different styles (Haussmanian buildings, Art Nouveau, traditional Marseilles buildings, large housing estates, etc.) therefore coexist along the main streets.
