The old town of Arles consists of the Cité, Hauture, Méjan, Roquette, and La Cavalerie/Portagnel districts located inside the medieval wall. The outlying districts, on the other hand, were added in two main waves at the end of the 19th century and in the 1960s-1970s. The city center was geographically set at the end of the 12th century when, threatened by insecurity and epidemics, Arles was reorganized within a reduced enclosure.
