Of the Saint-Pierre theater inaugurated on December 16, 1786, in Martinique, only the two staircases and the central fountain visible in this photo remain today. They rub shoulders with the step, the pillars of the facade, the orchestra pit, and the passage for orchestra seats. Degraded several times by cyclones and earthquakes, this place of culture dedicated to lyrical art was also used for political rallies, official events, conferences, or the Carnaval de Saint-Pierre. Each time rebuilt according to its splendor and luxury, it was largely destroyed by the eruption of Mount Pelée on May 8, 1902.
