The harbor of Cherbourg is one of the largest artificial harbors ever built. From the end of the 18th century, the Large dyke (1,86 mile / 3 km long) was built in the open sea, thanks to innovative processes. From the imagination of Vauban to Napoleon I and Napoleon III, forts multiplied in the harbor. Some are still standing today, such as the forts of Pelee Island and the rock of Homet.
