The Cévennes National Park was created in 1970 and is one of the ten national parks in France. This mid-mountain territory extends over three departments – Lozère, Gard, and Ardèche – and has a permanent population of 67,000 inhabitants spread over 127 municipalities. The Cévennes National Park is a natural area of 1,042 square miles (2,700 km²) composed of a protected and regulated heart and a peripheral area made up of municipalities abiding by the charter and the values of the park. UNESCO has listed the Cévennes National Park as a Biosphere Reserve for its balance between men and nature and as a World Heritage Site for the cultural landscapes of agro-pastoralism of the Causses and the Cévennes.
