The Norman cow would come from a distant cross-breeding between Norman cattle and others brought by the Vikings. However, the animals of today mostly originated from genetic manipulations that started after the Second World War. Though they are widely spread throughout Normandy, they are present outside of France. After Belgium, England, and Ireland, they have been breeding for more than 100 years in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela.
