From the end of the 17th century, the construction and reinforcement of the fortifications of Briançon extensively used lime. The material allowed making plasters and mortars impermeable to runoff water and resistant to fire and frost. The Briançonnais region then had more than two hundred lime kilns that valorized the local resources: limestone (from the rivers), wood, and coal.
