Each year, white ewes from the Massif Central spend the summer and graze around Mont Lozère (5,574 ft / 1,699 m). According to an age-old tradition, they come down at the beginning of September, before lambing season. One of the largest herds in the Massif Central, with nearly 2,500 ewes, walks the 18 miles (30 km) that separate it from its valley. According to a bioethical approach, they will have maintained the undergrowth, the heather, and the brushwood, as well as the Stevenson path followed by numerous hikers.
