A perpetuated cheese-making tradition

Known for bearing the name of the most famous Norman cheese, the village of Camembert houses 187 inhabitants in the heart of the Pays d'Auge. The local cheese-making tradition dates back to 1791, and a Brotherhood of Camembert Knights perpetuates the legacy. The village's 16th-century Notre-Dame-et-Sainte-Anne church displays a banner from 1772 carried by Norman pilgrims to Mont-Saint-Michel as well as a painting on wood retracing the event. Both have been listed as Historical Monuments since 1966.
