A lasting pilgrimage tradition

The pilgrimage tradition to the chapel at the top of the Sainte-Victoire mountain dates back to the 16th century. The first written testimonies mention gatherings of pilgrims who came to venerate the relics sheltered in this chapel from 1546. The most important pilgrimages were organized by the inhabitants of Pertuis between 1652 and 1672, from 1691 to the French Revolution, and again from the end of the 18th century until the abandonment of the site at the end of the 19th century. The tradition persists today in the form of the Roumavagi, which brings together pilgrims and tourists every last Sunday in April around a mass said in Provençal, the blessing of the mountain, and folkloric events.
