A tower and dungeons
0
0
In 1147, the Hohenstaufens built a castle named Castrum Estuphin. Sitting at an altitude over 2,260 ft (700 m), it only consisted of a tower with dungeons. It was constructed on land borrowed from the Canons of Saint-Denis. In 1359 the Bishop of Strasbourg bought the castle for 10,000 gold florins. The Duke of Lorraine, whishing to appropriate the fortress, contested the transaction for several years without success. The Holy Roman Empire finally took control of the Haut-Koenigsbourg.
