A tower built by Saint Louis

The Tour de Constance, built by Saint Louis on the site of the old Matafère tower in 1242, is the only defensive element in Aigues-Mortes. The châtelet is connected to the tower dedicated to the protection of the city and the port by a fixed bridge and was originally surrounded by an annular moat. The Tour de Constance, organized around three gates, was nicknamed the King's Tower in 1249 and completed after the return from the Seventh Crusade in 1254.
