Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is renowned for its two Vauban towers built at Fort de la Hougue and Fort de Tatihou and registered on the UNESCO Heritage List since 2008. Following a military disaster that saw 12 vessels being destroyed by the English and the Dutch in front of Tatihou and La Hougue in 1692, Vauban obtained subsidies to strengthen their defenses. From 1694 to 1699, he built a tower on three levels served by a spiral staircase on the highest point of the Fort de la Hougue. The structure's terrace accommodated six cannons.
